Jonah
As a junior in high school, I thought I had my life pretty planned out. I would gradate, go to a big fancy college, get married, and live a content life. I was bright eyed and bushy tailed, waiting for graduation day to come. As I was cutting lettuce as a café worker that becomes your social time. We were talking about the different ministries that are going on in our church. My boss looked at me and said, “You know I did canvassing when I was your age, I think you would be good at it.” I didn’t even know what canvassing was, so It left my mind, or so I thought. Later on in the same week the Literature Evangelist for Minnesota came to speak at our school, talking about the canvassing work. “Hmmm, could this mean something, naahhh.” I said to myself. Eventually the Literature Evangelist approached me and said, “I have been praying for you to come canvass with us this summer. Please pray about it.” Then he walked away. I didn’t want to canvass, I had camping, and Pathfinders, family too look forward too. In boarding school summer is your breathing time. I said, “NO, not going to do it.” You know I have always considered myself to be a Jonah. I run from difficulties, instead of running to God. Good thing God runs after us too. Eventually the Holy Spirit convicted me to go canvassing, and my life has never been the same. Because of canvassing I learned what it meant to rely on God, how to be patient, slow to anger, and humble at heart. I learned that work that doesn’t point others back to Jesus is a waisted of time. Because of that canvassing program, my pride was crushed, and now I am on a personal walk with Jesus. Walking from door to door allowed me to finally define who God was to me. Now I am a student at Ouachita Hills College, I know this is where God needs me to be. I may not know where God is calling you, but He is. Listen to Him, don’t run He’ll find you (believe me), and you will save so much time, and save yourself a lot of heartache if you listen. So please, pray, and don’t be afraid, He knows you better than you do yourself.
